RHA in concrete: a practical guide to dosage & gains

Micronized Rice Husk Ash powder used as a pozzolanic SCM in concrete

Rice Husk Ash is a highly reactive pozzolan, which makes it a strong candidate as a Supplementary Cementitious Material (SCM) in concrete. Used correctly, it raises compressive strength, reduces permeability and improves resistance to sulphate and chloride attack — while cutting cement consumption and the embodied carbon of the mix.

How RHA strengthens concrete

When cement hydrates it releases calcium hydroxide (free lime), which contributes little to strength and can leave concrete vulnerable to chemical attack. The amorphous silica in RHA reacts with that free lime to form additional calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) — the same compound that gives cement its strength. The result is a denser, less permeable matrix.

Typical dosage ranges

As a partial cement replacement, RHA is commonly trialled in the 5–15% range by weight of cementitious material. Lower dosages (5–10%) suit general structural concrete; higher dosages can be explored for high-performance and durability-critical mixes. Because reactivity depends on fineness and silica content, always validate the dosage with trial mixes against your target strength and workability.

Indicative ranges only — confirm the optimum dosage with lab trial mixes using your aggregates, cement and the actual RHA grade supplied.

Practical tips

  • Account for the higher surface area of micronized RHA — you may need a small adjustment in water or admixture for workability.
  • Pair RHA with a water-reducer to retain flow at higher replacement levels.
  • Specify a consistent, NABL-tested grade so mix performance is repeatable batch to batch.

The takeaway

For ready-mix producers, precasters and infrastructure projects chasing durability and a lower carbon footprint, RHA is a proven, cost-effective SCM. Start from conservative dosages, validate with trial mixes, and lock in a supplier who can document every batch.
